Bulgaria's greatest successes were more than thirty years ago when they won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Moscow (1980) and gold in their own country at the 1981 EC. Bulgaria's two most recent successes were bronze at the 2001 EC and bronze at the European League in 2013.

Dragan Nesic, who took over in late 2014, returns for a second time as coach of Bulgaria’s women’s team having previously been at the helm between 2007 and 2010. During that time he guided them to a bronze medal in the 2009 European League and silver in the 2010 edition of the tournament. This will be his first time coaching them at the World Grand Prix however, as their first two appearances came in 2013 and 2014. At club level, he won the 2008/09 CEV Challenge Cup with Italy’s Monte Schiavo Banca Marche Jesi. Nesic, who has coached several men’s and women’s club teams in Europe, left Romanian team CSM Targoviste in 2015 to sign with Turkey’s Bursa Metropolitan.
